Network Monitor 3.0 is a protocol analyzer. It allows you to capture network traffic, view and analyze it. This version is a complete overhaul of the previous Network Monitor 2.x version.

System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2003 x64 editions; Windows Vista; Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition; Windows XP; Windows XP 64-bit
It is suggested that you have a CPU of 1GHz or greater, 1G or greater of Memory and 25 Megs of available Hard Disk space, plus room for capture files.

Network Monitor 3.0 can co-exist with older versions of Network Monitor. NM3 installs in %program files%Microsoft Network Monitor 3.0, so there is no conflict.

For Vista, we have a new driver that supports new features available in the NDIS 6.0 driver. If you are using tools that rely on Network Monitor 2.x NPPTools, these tools will no longer work.

Capturing on Vista requires NM3, as Netmon2.x does not capture properly on Vista.
If during installation, you opt to use Microsoft Update to receive critical updates, then the installer will configure your system to receive these updates. If this configuration fails (because, for example, your Automatic Update settings are managed by a network administrator), the installation will continue without informing you. To ensure you have successfully signed up for Microsoft update, go to If the configuration was successful, the site will provide information about available updates. If not, the site allows you to sign up for Microsoft Update directly.

Warning: Capturing with the NM3 GUI with conversations enabled can use up considerable amount of memory. This may cause a machine to become unresponsive. If you need to capture data for long periods of time, please use the included command line utility, NMCap, and the /DisableConversations switch.

Additional Information

Common Issues:

Protocols may not parse correctly in either of these two situations.

1. Conversations Not Enabled – Certain protocols depend on conversations properties to store state values that may be needed in a later frames. For instance TCP needs conversations to store information about retransmitted frames, so the filter for TCP Retransmits won’t work unless conversations are enabled. Similarly, SMB can’t translate the response to a Transact command, because the response doesn’t contain the original command. This information is also saved in conversation properties.

2. This parser and associated protocol(s) may be available under the MCPP and WSPP licensing programs; if you are interested in learning more about becoming a licensee please see:

These parsers are considered Confidential Microsoft Intellectual Property and are not distributed publicly; therefore they are not part of the publicly released version of Microsoft Network Monitor 3.0

If you get an error “None of the network adapters are bound to the Netmon driver" or “This network adapter is not configured to capture with Network Monitor", this may occur if you are running on Vista, and either NM3 is not run with elevated privileges, or you are not part of the Netmon Users group. See the release notes for more information.

You cannot select a VPN/RAS interface for capturing. VPN/RAS capture support is unavailable on Windows Vista at this time.
